The pattern is created using a traditional resist painting technique similar to batik. Artisans hand-paint designs with Sadza—a maize-based paste and Zimbabwean staple—then leave the fabric to dry in the sun. Once dried, the fabric is hand-painted, baked in an industrial oven to set the color, and the hardened Sadza is gently scraped away, revealing a unique crackled design.
